TEACHERS at the troubled De La Salle College have indicated they are prepared to take strike action.

More than 70 per cent of INTO members in the west Belfast school said they would take action up to and including strike following a ballot.

De La Salle College has been embroiled in a long-running row between staff and management.

The school has seen pickets by parents and sixth form pupils amid fears that summer exams will be affected.

Dozens of people attended a protest on Monday night organised by the Concerned Parents Committee of De La Salle College.

The protest happened on the same day as Imelda Jordan, the former head of St Colm's in Twinbrook, began work as 'associate principal'.

The college has been in turmoil over a breakdown in relations between some of the 70-strong staff and the principal, Claire White, for several months.

The INTO has 57 members at the school, of which 29 voted in the industrial action ballot.

Of those who voted, 20 supported action up to and including strike.

The result will now be subject to discussions between the INTO leadership and members in the school and a course of action will be determined in the coming weeks.

The union's executive in Dublin could still decide not to support any action if it is damaging to pupils or counterproductive.

In a statement late on Tuesday night, the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) said "any industrial action arising from the outcome of the ballot will be considered only after meetings are held with the school representatives and members in the college".

It added: "A decision to engage in any industrial action arising from the outcome of the ballot will require, under INTO rules, the approval of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of INTO.

""INTO will be also writing to the Board of Governors to formally advise them of the outcome of the ballot."
