A 31-YEAR-OLD woman murdered in Lurgan has been described as an "inspiration".

Detectives confirmed following a post mortem that they had launched a murder investigation into the death of Laura Marshall.

A 36-year-old man, named locally at Gary O'Dowd, remained in custody on Monday after being arrested by police.

It is understood the man, a nephew of education minister and local MLA John O'Dowd, was the partner of the victim.

Ms Marshall's body was believed to have been found by neighbours in the flat they shared at Victoria Street in the Co Armagh town at around 5.30pm on Sunday.

On Monday, a police cordon remained around the apartment block, a former linen mill converted into flats and businesses.

Detective Chief Inspector Eamonn Corrigan appealed to anyone who had seen or had any contact with Ms Marshall over the weekend to contact police.

"I also want to hear from anyone who saw or heard any activity at Laura’s home in Victoria Street over the weekend until yesterday evening at 5.30pm," he said.

Ms Marshall, a niece of Sam Marshall (31) who was controversially killed by loyalists shortly after leaving Lurgan police station with high-profile republican Colin Duffy in 1990, was described in tributes as "popular and outgoing".

Dean Oxby wrote on Facebook: "My sister was an inspiration and a role model growing up but sadly she is no longer here... I'm gonna miss you... RIP Laura Marshall you will always be on my mind."

Another friend said: "Thoughts and prayers go out tonight to all Laura Marshall's family and friends, honestly can't believe what has happened, such a lovely girl."

A former work colleague said: "So sad, can't believe it. I worked with Laura about 9 years ago, so bubbly, fun-loving and full of life, thoughts and prayers with all of her family and friends".

SDLP assembly member Dolores Kelly said there was great shock and sadness in the community.

"She was loved by many and it is such a brutal end to such a beautiful young life," she said.

Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Seeley said: "This tragic event has sent a wave of shock throughout the community in north Lurgan and beyond.

"It is very early for any details to be released and the PSNI should be allowed space to carry out their investigations. I would call on anyone with any information to contact the PSNI immediately."
