RORY McIlroy is to host an evening with Alex Ferguson in Dublin ahead of the Irish Open.

The Holywood golfer, who is an avid Manchester United fan, will speak to the legendary former football manager at the event at the Convention Centre on May 17.

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the evening, which will be compered by Coleraine-born actor James Nesbitt.

The festivities will also be filmed for a Sky TV special with all proceeds raised to go to the Rory Foundation.

McIlroy said on Thursday night said: "I can’t wait to be back in Ireland to be able to host this event at the Convention Centre ahead of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

"Over the course of the tournament, I want to raise as much money as I can for my Foundation as there are many children’s charities out there really in need of the support.

"As a huge Manchester United fan, I’m delighted Sir Alex has agreed to join me.

"And with Jimmy Nesbitt as the event's MC, it’s shaping up to be a really enjoyable evening."

The Rory Foundation was established in 2013 to help children live better lives, to raise funds and offer support to children's charities with a special meaning and purpose for McIlroy.

Beneficiaries of the Rory Foundation so far have included the Cancer Fund for Children, Mencap NI and Sport Changes Life, all based in Northern Ireland.

The Rory Foundation will host the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open for the second year running from May 19 to 22 at The K Club and a percentage of tickets sold throughout the tournament will go directly to the Rory Foundation.

Early bird tickets can now on sale for €60 at www.aneveningwithrory.com and are limited to six per person.
