A 55-year-old man has been killed in a gangland-style shooting in Co Meath.

The shooting happened at around 7.45pm at the Old Mill housing estate on the Fairyhouse Road in Ratoath.

It is understood the man was sitting in his car when the attack happened. He is thought to have died at the scene.

The man was known to gardaí as a cigarette smuggler.

He was an associate of suspected armed robber Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch.

It was unclear if the shooting had any connection to the recent feud between the Hutch and Kinahan criminal gangs.

The feud claimed two lives in Dublin earlier this year.

On February 5, David Byrne (34) was shot dead during a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in north Dublin.

Murder squad detectives believe his murder was in retaliation for the shooting dead of Gary Hutch on the Costa del Sol last September.

Gerry Hutch's brother Eddie (55) was killed in his Dublin home three days after Byrne's death.
