A PIPE bomb exploded outside a house in north Belfast amid several security alerts over the weekend that caused major disruption.

Damage was caused to a window frame in the attack but the occupants of the property on Sheridan Street in the New Lodge area were not injured.

The PSNI said it is believed the device was thrown at the house overnight but was not reported until 9.45am on Saturday.

Several homes were evacuated during the police operation as remnants of the explosive were removed for examination.

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín condemned those behind the attack and said the residents had been left "badly shaken".

"Luckily no one was injured," she said. "I totally condemn those responsible for this incident and call on them to desist from this activity before someone is seriously injured or killed.

"The whole community must reject those involved in these attacks.

"I call on the PSNI to do all they can to bring those responsible for these attacks to account and call on anyone who has knowledge of those involved to bring it to the PSNI."

Meanwhile, residents in south Belfast were evacuated from their homes until around 4am yesterday in an alert that was later declared a hoax.

It followed the discovery of a suspicious object on the Upper Lisburn Road at around 12.30am.

Residents were evacuated for several hours, but after ATO examined the device it was declared a hoax.

PSNI Inspector Darren Hardy said: "This hoax device caused massive inconvenience, disruption and upset for the local community including many vulnerable and elderly people."

Donal Lyons, SDLP councillor for the Balmoral area of south Belfast, wrote on Twitter: "Glad to hear that the security alert at Richmond Park, off the Upper Lisburn Road is over and residents have been allowed return home.

"Still a very upsetting and frustrating night for all affected."

And in Carrickfergus a suspicious object examined by army bomb experts was found to be "nothing untoward".

The object was discovered on Saturday in an alleyway between Lancasterian Street and Albert Road.

Some nearby properties were evacuated "as a precaution" during the alert before residents were later allowed to return to their homes.
