BELFAST is set for another jobs blow as fears grow that scores of workers will be laid off at the BOC chemical plant in the east of the city.

BOC is the UK and Ireland’s largest supplier of industrial and medical gases and is a member of the £10 billion Linde Group.

The Irish News understands the company has written to staff warning that the transformation of the business will involve “a reduction in head count” and compulsory redundancies.

Last night BOC refused to comment directly on any potential job losses.

But a spokesman told The Irish News: “In response to the deepening slowdown that is affecting the global economy and the UK manufacturing sector, and subsequent changes in customer requirements, BOC is carrying out a review of its operations in the UK & Ireland. We are unable to make any further comment at this stage.”

BOC has a series of production and distribution centres across Ireland, where it employs more than 300 people.

It makes around 500 deliveries a day delivering gas cylinders to customers in the industrial, healthcare and hospitality sectors.
