HOLLYWOOD’S biggest night called for fashion's finest frocks, but some looks were more successful than others.

As the stars walked the red carpet outside Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday, there was an abundance of bold colours on show including reds, greens and blues.

One of the fashion successes of the night was Olivia Munn, who wore a stunning one-shouldered Stella McCartney orange gown with a tight skirt and elegant wrap sleeve.

Canadian actress Rachel McAdams drew admiring glances also with a halter-necked, high-slit emerald number from designer August Getty Atelier.

Charlize Theron's scarlet gown with thin sexy straps and plunging neckline also won over fashion fans watching the Academy Awards, as did Jennifer Lawrence's black and gold dress which featured dramatic ruffles.

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan also won in the style stakes, honouring her Irish roots with an emerald green Calvin Klein dress.

"I wore green at my first Oscars as well," she said.

"I wanted to wear green because I'm very proud to be Irish and Calvin Klein made this for me," she said.

But there were some stars whose choice of gowns missed the mark when it came to Oscar glamour.

Supermodel Heidi Klum, regarded as one of the world's most beautiful women and a red carpet veteran, failed to impress with her lavendar coloured puffy gown with tacked-on flowers.

Kate Winslet's ill-fitting black silk lamé Ralph Lauren gown also received the thumbs down, as did Cate Blanchett who showed off her figure in a bobbly blue number.
