A west Belfast man has complained that the PSNI wrongly connected him to the gang behind the murder of Dublin gang member David Byrne.

The man, who does not want to be named, received a ‘threat message’ from the PSNI last week claiming he is going to be shot by dissident republicans because of his alleged connections to the ambush gang.

The former republican prisoner is currently on licence after serving a sentence for paramilitary activity.

"The police message said he 'is going to be shot by dissident republicans. It is believed this is due to your association with the group who carried out the recent fatal shootings Dublin.

“'If you believe this refers to you, you may wish to review tour personal security'.”

A solicitor for the man last night described the warning as "erroneous" and said the PSNI gave his client two different names on their ‘threat message’.

Michael Brentnall of Robert Murtagh solicitors said: "Our client believes that the threat message served on him by the PSNI is entirely erroneous, and which is in fact in the name of another person.

"Our office has informed the PSNI of the error and have lodged a complaint with the Police Ombudsman’s office due to the serious implications this may have for him."

Mr Byrne, whose funeral took place in Dublin yesterday, was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in at Dublin’s Regency Hotel earlier this month.

Days later Dublin man Eddie Hutch Senior was also gunned down in an apparent revenge attack.

Security in Dublin has been tight since the gang armed with AKM automatic riffles and handguns opened fire at the hotel.
