BROOKLYN has won the Bafta for Outstanding British Film at Sunday's ceremony, with The Revenant walking away with five awards.

Colm Tóibín’s novel, adapted to the big screen by John Crowley’s and starring Co Carlow's Saoirse Ronan, took home the award for Outstanding British Film at the ceremony which took place at London's Royal Opera House.

The Bafta for leading actress went to Brie Larson for Room.

Larson won big for her role as 'Ma' in the film, which is based on the book of the same name by Irish author Emma Donoghue, and tells the story of a young woman (Larson) and her five-year-old son (seven-year-old newcomer Jacob Tremblay) who are held captive for six years in a tiny shed.

The 26-year-old actress won the coveted award over Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl),  Cate Blanchett (Carol) and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van).

His role of a fur trapper fighting for his life has earned him his sixth Oscar nomination with many critics believing this year could finally be his time to shine.

The accolate is considered to be a good indicator to success at Hollywood's Academy Awards, which take place on February 28.
