Two motorcyclists critical after separate crashes

A 21-YEAR-OLD man and a 20-year-old woman remained in a critical condition in hospital on Friday night following separate motorcycle crashes in Belfast and Co Tyrone.

Police also said a man was arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of officers following a collision during a pursuit of a stolen car in Derry.

In the first crash, a 21-year-old man was injured when his green Peugeot motorcycle was involved in a collision with a silver Mercedes car at Donegall Park Avenue in north Belfast at around 9.45pm on Thursday.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and police appealed for information.

In Co Tyrone, shortly after 1.30am on Friday, police came across a 20-year-old motorcyclist who had come off her black Honda bike on the Clanabogan Road near Omagh.

She was taken to hospital for her injuries and the scene of the single vehicle crash between Omagh and Dromore was closed off for several hours.

A spokeswoman for the Belfast health trust said both motorcyclists remained in a critical condition on Friday night.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was arrested after a stolen car crashed into another car during a police chase in Derry just before 12.30pm on Friday.

The grey Skoda Superb was taken in a creeper burglary in Lindenwood Park early on Friday morning.

It was spotted by police shortly after midday and when officers chased the stolen car it crashed into another car at Caw roundabout close to the Foyle Bridge.

No-one was seriously hurt in the crash but police said two officers who were on foot were injured during attempts to get out of the way when the stolen car drove at them. A third officer was injured while making an arrest.

None are believed to have received serious injuries.

A 24-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary, two counts of attempted murder of police officers, breach of bail and various road traffic offences.

He was being questioned on Friday night. Police appealed for information.

The Caw roundabout on the Waterside end of the bridge was closed following the crash, leading to long tailbacks across the city.

Meanwhile, police have also reissued an appeal for information following a crash which claimed the life of 20-year-old Shannon Weir in Co Armagh last month.

The collision, involving a Nissan Micra car and a lorry, took place on the the Legacorry Road, Richhill at 3.30pm on Thursday, January 28.
