POLICE are investigating after a man was spotted in Derry distributing leaflets that linked homosexuality to the Holocaust.

It was reported that a man was distributing the leaflets outside the Richmond shopping centre on Ferryquay Street at around lunchtime on Tuesday.

The printed leaflets alleged that "homosexuals have the longest child abuse record in history" and that Hitler "used his homosexual formation.. to commit almost the whole Holocaust".

John O'Doherty, director of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) support group the Rainbow Project, condemned the "outlandish" leaflets.

"These smears and outright lies about LGB&T people, and particularly gay men, have long been peddled by the opponents of our community," he said.

"These lies find succour in a society which, although slowly edging towards equality for LGB&T people, still contains pervasive and damaging homophobic and transphobic attitudes."

The PSNI said: "The matter has been reported to police and enquiries are ongoing."
