POLICE are investigating the possibility that the body of a woman found on a Co Down beach may have washed ashore from Dublin.

Tests are underway to establish if the remains found on Tyrella beach on Tuesday are that of a woman last seen in the Dublin area last month.

The general description of the dead woman matches the missing Dublin woman who had been the subject of an Irish Coastguard search operation on January 22.

The PSNI are working with the Gardai to establish the identity of the woman.

The body was discovered by a man who was out walking his dog on the eastern end of the beach on Tyrella Strand just after 3pm.

It is believed the dog walker made the discovery near the high water mark.

Part of the beach was sealed off for investigation while the South Down Coastguard provided assistance.

It is not known how long the woman's body had been there.
