FORMER Linfield manager David Jeffrey has been recognised by the Orange Order for his sporting achievements

The 53-year-old Orangeman received the Grand Master's Award at a ceremony in Lisburn on Friday night.

Mr Jeffrey won 31 trophies during his 17-year spell with Linfield. In 2005 he opened the club's training ground at Midgley Park to allow a camogie team from St Mary's College in Belfast to train under floodlights.

The Order's grand master Edward Stevenson said Mr Jeffrey was a "role model".

"His proven leadership and motivational credentials, honed during his distinguished playing career which included representing Manchester United at youth level and the Irish League, are a benchmark and inspiring example for those involved in coaching in the local game and also further afield," he said.

Mr Jeffrey said he felt "proud and privileged" to receive the award.

"To be recognised by the Orange Institution and the Grand Master personally is a tremendous honour," he said.
