A CANNABIS factory with an estimated street value of around £30,000 has been uncovered by police in a residential bungalow in Co Down.

The plants and herbal cannabis were found at a property in Windsor Bungalows in Newry on Wednesday along with a vehicle and equipment used in the cultivation of cannabis, which were seized by officers.

PSNI Detective Inspector Keith Gawley said his officers searched this house "after a member of the public reported concerns about a smell emanating from the property".

"The discovery of this haul has taken a substantial amount of drugs off local streets and demonstrates that when people report their concerns to us, they are actively helping us stamp out the scourge of drugs in Newry," he said.

"I would encourage anyone with concerns about drug cultivation, dealing or supply in their community to please get in touch with us on the 101 non-emergency number. You can also report via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Meanwhile, officers from Lisburn District Support Team have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of possessing a class A drug with intent to supply after stopping a car at Nutts Corner Road on Thursday afternoon.

Around two kilogrammes of suspected amphetamine was discovered following the search of the car at around 4.30pm.

A quantity of white powder was later recovered as a result of a follow up search at an address in the Lisburn area.

The man remained in custody yesterday.

Inspector Mark Robinson warned anyone caught supplying drugs would be brought before the courts.

"We want to send a very clear message to those involved in supplying any form of controlled drugs, that if detected, they can expect to be brought before the courts."
