A SEVEN-year-old boy killed in a road accident in Co Fermanagh has been named locally as Ryan McGovern.

Ryan was knocked down at about 1pm on Lattone Road, between the villages of Belcoo and Garrison on Sunday.

It is understood he was at a house on the road when he was hit by a van which was reversing.

He was taken to South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Ryan, the middle of three sons, is survived by his brothers Daniel and Ben and parents Michelle and Donal.

SDLP councillor Brendan Gallagher said he was stunned by Ryan's sudden death.

"It's just tragic," he said. "He was such a lovely young fella, as good as gold."

"Everyone in the area is just shocked by what's happened. My condolences go out to the family."

Sinn Féin councillor Anthony Feely expressed his deepest sympathies to the McGovern family.

"The news that broke this afternoon is sending shockwaves throughout the Garrison, Belleek and surrounding areas," he said.

"Accidents like this are always extremely difficult but as we approach Christmas, a time when families come together, it adds to the devastation.

"My son was in the same class as Ryan and therefore I can't begin to imagine what Michelle and Donal, as well as Ryan's brothers Daniel and Ben and the extended McCafferty and McGovern families are going through.

"The entire community will rally round to support the family through this tough time as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers."

Ulster Unionist councillor Alex Baird extended his sympathies to the family.

"It's just so sad for this to happen in the mouth of Christmas," he said.

Police appealed for anyone who saw the accident to contact them.
