THE mother-of-two who escaped death in a Co Louth gun attack that killed a garda has woken from a coma.

Siobhan Phillips was shot several times by her partner Adrian Crevan Mackin in October as she was escorted home by Garda Tony Golden following a complaint of domestic violence.

Mackin (24), originally from the Newry area, killed Garda Golden before turning the gun on himself.

It was feared Ms Phillips, who lost an eye in the attack, may never regain conciousness.

But her family said the 21-year-old came round last week.

"The first thing she said when she came round was that she asked about the children and we were able to tell her they were all right," her grandmother Kay Phillips told the Sunday World.

"We're so delighted. The country was praying for her, She had four bullets in her, but she wasn't meant to die and that's all I can say."

Ms Phillips had been returning to the Omeath home she shared with Mackin on October 11 to collect her belongings, when the shooting occurred.

She had decided to leave him, having endured nearly a year of physical abuse from him.

She had made a statement to Garda Golden (36) who travelled with her to the terraced house where they were gunned down by Mackin.
