FRUGAL football fans could grab a bargain trip to next year's Euros with trips to France to watch their team's three group games possible for as little as £500.

That's the cost of flying out to France for the matches, travel between the host cities, and for accommodation, when the Irish News searched for the best deals last night.

It could make it the most accessible major football tournament ever for Irish fans with tens of thousands of supporters expected to desert the country - from both sides of the border - whether they have tickets for the games or not.

For supporters of Northern Ireland, it means flying from Belfast on June 11 and returning on June 22 for an all-in price of £501.

Those wishing to follow the Republic will pay slightly more - but still spend a bank balance friendly £578 for the trip.

The offers are available by scouring the internet for the best deals - and not always going for the obvious option.

For Republic supporters, it means return flights from Dublin to Paris with Lufthansa and further internal flights to Bordeaux and Lille.

That will allow supporters to be in Paris for the match against Sweden before taking in the games against Belgium and Italy.

A short train journey from Lille back to Charles de Gaulle Airport and it's back to the emerald isle.

Fans of the north have a cheaper but more complicated journey.

They can fly to Nice from Belfast via an overnight stay in a London airport for £113 to get to the French Riviera in time for their opening game against Poland.

From there, internal flights to Lyon and on to Paris serve the matches versus Ukraine and Germany.

A flight home to Belfast via Brussels would cost £106.

When it came to accommodation, we chose the cheapest option available at each city - often in hostel dorms.

Other cheap hotels are also available and camping is always an alternative but sites tend to be located further out of cities adding to travel costs.

And don't forget to add in spending money for food and drink as well as the cost of match tickets (which start at £18 per game).

Paul Loughran from the West Belfast Ireland Supporters' Club said prices were staying low due to the vast number of routes to get to the tournament.

"There are just so many options, you can fly into France itself or even into one of the neighbouring countries that border France close to where your match is.

"We're flying into Brussels and then have accommodation booked in Paris. It is 600km to Bordeaux and we are seriously looking at flights."

As for the chances of sporting success, Mr Loughran added: "It is a very tough draw but Northern Ireland didn't get it easy either so it is difficult all over."
