A RETIRED policeman in his forties died when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car in Co Down on Thursday morning.

The crash happened at about 10.45am on the Killinchy Road near Comber.

The car involved in the collision was a blue Renault Megane.

Police asked anyone who saw either the motorcycle or the car in the area before the crash to contact officers at Lisburn PSNI Station.

The Killinchy Road was closed for several hours following the crash.

Tributes were paid to the retired officer at Thursday's meeting of the Policing Board.

Councillor Trevor Cummings, chair of Ards and North Down PCSP, said he was "saddened to learn that another life has been lost on our roads".

He said: "I would extend my sympathies to the victim's family and friends - they will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

"I understand this brings the number of people killed on Northern Ireland's roads this year to 66.

"At this busy time, when the winter weather can often make travelling more difficult, I would encourage everyone to take extra care when driving."
