SCHOOLS in Co Down have sent a letter to parents urging them to be vigilant after reports that drug dealers have been approaching pupils as young as 11.

The letter, sent to parents of pupils at Bangor Grammar, Bangor Academy, Glenlola Collegiate and St Columbanus' College, warned that the PSNI have received information that attempts to sell drugs have been made at the town's bus station and on Dufferin Avenue.

It is understood that older boys, not in school uniform, have been approaching the younger pupils and offering them drugs.

Signed by four principals, the letter said: "They (police) have given assurances that there will be an increased PSNI presence in this area, but nevertheless we believe that it is our duty to inform parents of the dangers facing our pupils."

"In particular, we have been concerned to note reports of widespread cannabis use among teenagers in our area."

Police in Ards & North Down said they are continuing to work closely with the community and schools to tackle concerns about drug dealing.

Chief Inspector Gerry McGrath said: “We are aware of a recent report that a school pupil was approached in Bangor Rail and Bus Station and offered drugs.

“The young man had the good sense to tell his parents who took the appropriate action and brought it to the attention of the police and his school," he told UTV.

“I also welcome the responsible joint approach by the four schools on tackling this issue and on signposting young people to the FASA support group. I encourage parents and teachers to report any concerns to police.”

DUP North Down MLA Gordon Dunne tweeted: "Very alarmed that drugs are being offered to Bangor school kids - action must be taken to stop young lives being ruined."
