Police helicopter and fire crews using hear-seeking equipment launched a search and rescue operation along the River Strule in Omagh on Sunday following reports that a young man had entered the water close to Drumragh Bridge.

A motorist reported raised the alarm after seeing a young male climbing on railings close to the river around lunchtime on Sunday.

A search operation was launched and rescue crews remained along the bank of the river for most of Sunday, using special heat seeking search equipment.

Police said while one had been reported missing locally they would ask member of the public to contact them if they had any concerns about a missing relative.

A police spokesperson said, "At this stage we have not found anything that suggests a person has actually entered the water however we need to be sure and so we are carrying out this search operation supported by our colleagues in the PSNI Air Support Unit and with help from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of Community House or travelling along Drumragh Avenue and who may have seen a young man in the area or on the bridge.

"We have not received any reports of anyone missing locally however for anyone having trouble reaching a young male family member or friend, if you are concerned, please get in touch", the spokesman added
