A TEMPORARY ban on roadworks affecting the main routes into Belfast and Lisburn comes into effect today.

The annual embargo on planned roadworks lasts until January 4 and is aimed at easing traffic congestion over the Christmas and New Year period.

The voluntary arrangement between TransportNI and the utility companies will place a temporary ban on all planned road works on the main routes in Belfast and Lisburn, except for works which are unavoidable.

Andrew Irvine of Belfast City Centre Management Company also welcomed the embargo saying shoppers and traders would benefit.
