A SOUTH Belfast man who is facing charges linked to a gun attack has been granted compassionate bail to allow him to attend his child's Christening.

Jonathan Graham-Orr, from Beechill Park Avenue, is currently on remand in prison on two charges linked to a shooting earlier this year.

The 29-year old has been charged with wounding a man with intent on January 9, 2015, and also of possessing a firearm - namely a black handgun - with intent to cause fear of violence.

On Thursday at Belfast Crown Court a solicitor, acting on behalf of Orr, made the compassionate bail application in front of Judge Gordon Kerr QC and asked for him to be released to attend the 'dedication' service in the Elim Church next weekend.

A Crown prosecutor said that Orr was facing charges in relation to a "drugs-related shooting", addding "this is a case where the police have concerns."

Telling the court "the victim in this case and his partner are in fear of this man", the prosecutor also expressed concerns that "there would be a temptation to potentially drink", given that after the church service, there will also be a function in the annex of a nearby hotel.

Orr's solictor reminded the court that his client was released on compassionate bail earlier this year so he could be at the birth of his child, which presented no problems.

Judge Kerr agreed to grant bail on condition that Orr returns at 6pm.
