A 26-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court charged with making a threat on social media to damage a mosque.

James Boyd of Windyhill Road, Macosquin, Co Derry, was arrested in the Coleraine area on Thursday and appeared at the town's Magistrates Court on Friday.

He is charged with making a comment on a social media site regarding threats to destroy or damage 'The Mosque' belonging to the Muslim community in Coleraine.

A police officer said she believed she could connect the accused to the charge.

Wearing jeans and a hoodie, Boyd was flanked by a prison officer in the dock.

He was not put on his plea and a prosecutor said a full file has still to be prepared in the case.

A defence solicitor said her client's only income is a student loan.

Releasing the accused on his own bail of £300, District Judge Liam McNally imposed conditions banning him from using social media.

The accused is also banned from Gateside Road in Coleraine where the mosque is situated.

The case was adjourned to December.
