POLICE have launched a murder investigation following the death of a disabled pensioner two months after he suffered a "horrendous attack" in his Co Armagh home.

Eugene Carr (73) was attacked in his bed by a gang of men who broke into his Bessbrook home in August.

Mr Carr was admitted to hospital following the attack and he died last night.

Police said three men broke into the pensioner's house in Clogharevan Park at around 2.40am on August 31.

They attacked Mr Carr with a sharp object, possibly a hook, and he was cut several times.

Chief Inspector Lee McNevison said the “elderly and vulnerable” victim was subjected to a “horrendous” attack.

“A post mortem will be carried out in due course, however, we believe at this stage that he died from the injuries he received following the violent aggravated burglary,” he said.

Police also believe some money was stolen in the attack.

SDLP councillor Kate Loughran said she was deeply saddened to learn of Mr Carr's death.

"The whole community will be so saddened that he has passed away," she said.

"Unfortunately it was a horrific attack. It's just a very difficult time."
