A security alert sparked by claims that a bomb has been left at the side of a country road in Co Derry was continuing.

Earlier this week police warned members of the public in the Drumnsurn area to be vigilant after a local charity received a call claiming an explosive device had been left in the area.

It is believed British soldiers involved in training exercises in the may have been the target of the bomb alert.

There was controversy earlier this year after British soldiers were filmed during a training exercise in the isolated district.

Several roads in the district were sealed off last night as security forces carried searches.

It is believed the operation is centred on an area close to the junction of Legavallon Road and Belraugh Road.

A spokesman for the PSNI said the security alert was ongoing.
