AN elderly woman died after she was hit by a car in Co Antrim yesterday afternoon.

The woman was named locally last night as mother-of-three Annie Mooney from Market Street in Ballycastle.

She was hit in The Diamond in Ballycastle at about 1.45pm. It is understood she was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.

An 18-year-old woman was arrested following the crash.

It is understood the teenager was driving a green Vauxhall Corsa.

Police appealed for information.

SDLP North Antrim representative Connor Duncan said the death was "tragic".

"I want to extend my deepest sympathies to both the victim and her family at this difficult time," he said.

"I would urge all drivers in the area to exercise caution on the roads, especially as we move into the winter months when road conditions will worsen."
