GREGGS Bakery is planning a major expansion with up to 50 potential new shops, it is understood.

The bakery chain, which has 1,670 stores in Britain, opened its first store at the site of the Applegreen service station on the M2 near Templepatrick earlier this year.

A keen hit with customers, Greggs has built a reputation around low-cost pies and sausage rolls, which are sold for as little as 80p.

The company, which posted an annual profit of £58 million in March, has claimed that introducing the new national living wage at £7.20 per hour could force it to up its prices.

The opening of the M2 store was described as a "trial" by a Greggs spokesman earlier this year.
