A PSNI recruiting event will go ahead at a new venue in Derry after a hotel was forced to cancel the event following a bomb attack.

Police have confirmed the event, originally due to take place at the Waterfoot hotel, will now go ahead at St Columb’s Park House in Derry’s Waterside.

The event was thrown into doubt after a viable bomb was discovered at the Waterfoot despite a police decision to postpone the recruitment fair to facilitate a wedding at the hotel.

Hotel owner Garvan O’Doherty announced on Tuesday that he was forced to cancel the event over concerns for the safety of his staff and customers.

Mr O’Doherty said he was left with no other option following last Friday’s attempted bomb attack.

However, police have now confirmed two recruitment information session will take place at St Columb’s Park House at 3.30pm and 4.30pm on Saturday.

As the fall-out over from the bomb discovery continued DUP MP Gregory Campbell and Derry independent councillor Gary Donnelly clashed over the issue.

Mr Donnelly - who is also a leading member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement - said the blame for last week’s attack lay with the PSNI for attempting to hold a recruitment fair in a public building and described those wanting to join the PSNI as “stupid and naive.”

However the East Derry MP and MLA branded Mr Donnelly’s comments as “disgraceful.”

He said: “They (police recruits) demonstrate bravery and courage which people like Gary Donnelly know nothing about.”
