THE leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin is to be honoured by his former school.

St Columb’s college past pupils' union in Derry has selected Archbishop Martin as its “alumnus Illustrissimus".

The honour is awarded annually to an outstanding past pupil.

Previous winners have included Nobel laureates, John Hume and Seamus Heaney, former Bishop of Derry Edward Daly and playwright Brian Friel who last died earlier this month.

As well as attending the school as a pupil, Archbishop Martin worked at St Columb’s as a teacher and was later president.

He will receive his award at a ceremony on November 6.
