MEETINGSinvolving Jonathan Powell and representatives of loyalist paramilitary groups did not discuss 'disbandment', sources have told the Irish News.

The initiative organised by Ukip MLA David McNarry and facilitated by former police officer Peter Sheridan, now head of Cooperation Ireland, has been taking place on and off over over the last two years in an attempt to prevent further violence and infighting among the badly fractured organisations.

Mr Powell, a former Downing Street chief of staff, met with senior members of almost all factions of the UDA, UVF and Red Hand Commando.

The Irish department of foreign affairs was also aware of the talks and provided support.

Only the breakaway South East Antrim UDA declined to take part.

The meetings involved discussing how those who wanted to move away could 'disappear' back into society.

However, a source said last night: "Disbandment wasn't discussed, it would never work like that, loyalism is too split and not everyone buys into this 'old boys' association model of dealing with the past. So there needs to be other ways that those who want to move away from the organisation can."
