The Police Ombudsman has appealed for information about a fatal road crash on the M1 last month.

A blue Volkswagen Polo was being driven in the wrong direction on the motorway when it collided with an unmarked police car, a black Vauxhall Insignia, between Lurgan and Moira.

The collision happened at around 5am on Monday September 21.

The Volkswagen, registration PLZ 9306, was being driven by 84-year-old Phillip Smythe, who died in hospital two days later.

A Police Ombudsman spokesman said: "We are looking to establish the circumstances of this incident and are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen either the collision or the vehicles in the area.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman's witness appeal line on 0800 032 7880".
