A FORMER Down senior hurler is critically ill in hospital after suffering a fall at his home.

Johnny 'Boon' McGrattan, who is manager of Ballygalget GAC, is in intensive care at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

The accident came a day after he coached his team at the Down senior hurling championship on Sunday where they lost to Ballycran.

His family are maintaining a vigil at his bedside and the club has posted a message on its Facebook page asking people to pray for the 38-year-old, along with pictures of religious symbols of hope.

The former Down senior player won a National League Division Two and an Ulster medal with his county and is a two-time Ulster medalist with Ballygalget.

Mr McGrattan has also won nine county club championship medals.

The Portaferry club posted a tribute in the early hours of Monday morning to the manager.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with senior manager Johnny McGrattan who is in hospital."

It has been inundated with support and good wishes for his family.
