THE condition of a teenager who survived a horrific road crash in Co Down that claimed the lives of his two friends has improved.

It is understood Che Kane (17) was taken off a life support machine on Wednesday at Craigavon Area Hospital where he is being treated.

A spokeswoman for the hospital last night said he was "ill but stable".

The teenager was injured in a road crash on the Kilbroney Road in Rostrevor on Monday.

His two friends Eoin Farrell and James Miskelly - both 17 - were killed after the car careered off the road and hit a wall, ending up in a field.

The collision caused a fire in a nearby oil tank which spread to a house causing widespread devastation.

The trio had attended St Mark's High School in Warrenpoint together and were studying heavy vehicle maintenance at the Southern Regional College in Newry.

Both Eoin and James will be laid to rest today following their funerals in their home villages of Rostrevor and Mayobridge.

The family of James have asked his young friends attending his funeral not to wear black.

They have appealed for mourners to instead wear items that were James's favourite clothes including check shirts, flat caps and brown shoes.

His funeral will be held at St Patrick's Parish Church in Mayobridge at 3.30pm.

Eoin's funeral will take place at St Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Rostrevor at 11am.
