A SHAKE-UP of rural secondary schools will leave some pupils facing a 25-mile round-trip each day.

Three separate proposals have been published which, if approved, will see two schools in Co Fermanagh "discontinued" and a new college open in their place.

It has been proposed that St Comhghall's in Lisnaskea and St Eugene's in Roslea shut down and a new 650-pupil school open in Lisnaskea.

At present there are about 550 pupils at the two schools, which are about 13 miles apart.

Pupil numbers at St Comhghall's have been increasing in recent years - from 376 in 2010 to 470. Over the same period, numbers at St Eugene's fell from 190 to 78.

It is hoped the new school will open on the St Comhghall's site from September 2016.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools had consulted on the future of three secondary providers in south Fermanagh.

It was initially proposed that St Comhghall's, St Eugene's and St Aidan's in Derrylin amalgamate. Parents in Derrylin, however, formed an action group to develop alternative proposals, which involved having 11-16 provision remain in the village.
