Labour report recommends 'road map to prosperity'

THE shadow secretary of state has suggested the creation of a new forum for the north where a "new kind of politics" can flourish.

Ivan Lewis was speaking at the launch of a report commissioned by the British Labour Party to look at why Northern Ireland suffers relatively high unemployment and low levels of economic activity.

The report, co-authored by academic Deirdre Heenan and businessman Colin Anderson, recommends a 'road map' to prosperity and social justice, along with a refocus on how Westminster and Stormont work together.

It also calls for the creation of a 'leadership academy', which would foster the talents of those willing to take risks, an anti-poverty strategy, and making mental well-being a priority.

Mr Lewis put forward the idea of a social covenant for the north which he said would deliver change. He said this would demand a "new kind of politics" while creating the space for those politicians of all hues who were "ready to provide bold and visionary leadership".

"It is not for political parties to agree on the establishment of such a forum – create your own, don't wait for permission," he said.

"But make sure it is neither a talking shop or a vehicle for a narrow wish list whether from nationalist or loyalist; left or right."
