A STRETCH of road that claimed the life of a Co Armagh woman has been branded a "death trap" by a councillor who lives near the scene of the crash.

Danica Nugent, who was in her twenties, was killed in the one-vehicle crash on the Newry to Crossmaglen Road at Creggan Bridge at around 3.30am on Sunday.

SDLP councillor Geraldine Donnelly said she feared someone would be killed at the spot and had previously raised concerns about its safety record.

A 25-year-old man was treated for injuries in hospital but was later arrested on suspicion of a number of motoring offences.

Last night, he was being questioned by police.

Relatives of Ms Nugent, who was from Tassagh near Keady, were too distressed to speak but it is understood family members visited the scene of the crash.

Danica was the only daughter of Damian and Siobhan Nugent and sister to Matthew and Ethan.

Councillor Donnelly, who sits on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, said she had called for more safety measures on the stretch of road.

She said living close to the scene of yesterday's crash, her worst fears were realised when she received word of the fatality.

"I offer my sympathies to both families involved. It is terrible to think that after all the warnings, an accident has taken place again. The concerns we have had is that the B30 road is dangerous because it becomes narrow in places.

"We have campaigned for years to get the B30 road fixed from Newry to Crossmaglen and all we are told is there is nothing in the budget," she said.

"I met with Transport NI a fortnight ago about the B30 including this bridge that is a death trap. My husband went out for his walk this morning and called me to say the road was closed off and that someone had been killed," she said.

"It is awful to think this road has claimed this young woman's life and it is terrible for the family of this young woman who will be heartbroken at the loss of their loved one."

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old male motorcyclist from Co Antrim was killed in a collision with a van in Co Mayo yesterday afternoon.

The crash happened at Lehinch, on the Hollymount to Claremorris Road, at about 1.20pm.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to Mayo General Hospital where a post mortem is to be carried out.

The driver of the van was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
