AN east Belfast man has been arrested in connection with the murder of former IRA prisoner Kevin McGuigan.

The 41-year-old was arrested in the Short Strand area yesterday and taken to Antrim Serious Crime suite for questioning.

The father of nine was shot dead outside his Comber Court home in the Short Strand last month in revenge for the murder of former IRA commander Gerard 'Jock' Davison, who was shot dead in May.

To date 12 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation into the murder of the former IRA member. One man has been charged with possession of a weapon while the others have been released unconditionally.

The murder caused a political crisis after an assessment by PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton that members of the Provisional IRA were involved in the shooting and that some of the organisations's structures remain in place.

This prompted the Ulster Unionist Party to pull out of the Stormont executive.

However, Sinn Féin have denied IRA involvement and insists that those involved in the revenge style killing are nothing more than ''criminals".

Police last night said that a 41 year-old man had been arrested and taken to Antrim station for questioning.
