Parishioners in the north's highest village came together yesterday to celebrate the 100th birthday of their church.

A colourful procession of banners representing the townlands and parish groups of Pomeroy was received by Archbishop Eamon Martin before a special centenary Mass.

The Church of the Assumption was officially opened in the Co Tyrone village in August 1915 and extensively refurbished in recent years.

Dr Martin said for 100 years the beautiful building had stood as a "place of welcome for all".

"A church building such as this represents in so many ways the life and journey of the people of Pomeroy parish," he said.

"If these walls could speak they could tell of many happy days at Baptisms and First Communions, Confirmations, weddings and other happy celebrations. They could recount also many sad and tragic moments in this community when people came to grieve and weep, when families huddled together to comfort one another in times of sorrow.

"Through all of the ups and downs of life, people coming here to worship would have been reminded of Mary, their heavenly Mother, of her dedication and total commitment to God's will in her life."

Parish priest Fr David Moore also said it was a day to "remember, reflect, give thanks and celebrate".

"I invite you to pause and reflect on the strength of the faith community here in Pomeroy and pray that present and future generations will continue to nurture the previous gift of faith so cherished by us all," he said.
