Tributes have been paid to the organist at Holy Cross Church in north Belfast who died suddenly at the weekend.

Colum McGarry (43), from Banbridge, had been in charge of music at the Ardoyne monastery for the past five years.

Rector Fr Gary Donegan said there is a deep sense of shock and sadness.

"Colum died in his sleep. He had had tests for his heart, but it didn't seem to be anything serious," he said.

"He was an amazing man. He took over the choir and was director of music at Holy Cross - all the work he did was voluntary. He did funerals and any donation, he would give into the church.

"He was a great, outgoing character. He would take the choir out for meals and he worked with special needs children, helping autistic children to communicate through music.

"At Christmas he would be with Rev Ken Doherty (from Woodvale Presbyterian Church) serving at the ecumenical services and would be up at the ambulance station with a portable organ playing carols.

"He was single and travelled up to Holy Cross every Saturday night at Sunday noon for Mass, from Banbridge.

"He would also travel to Lourdes and even composed a piece when our new priest Gareth Thomas for his ordination.

"Colum had been out the night of his death and was in great form, so it was a terrible shock to everyone."

Fr Paddy McCafferty, who also knew the musician, paid tribute his work.

"Everyone who knew and loved him is in deep shock," he said.

"A tremendously talented and very human being."
