PARENTS have described their anger after damage was caused to a popular children's play park in Co Antrim after youths set fire to a trampoline.

Police are investigating the criminal damage at the park in the Marine Highway area of Carrickfergus.

A trampoline was set on fire on Thursday at around 9.20pm.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said it was being treated as a "deliberate fire".

PSNI Sergeant Katrina McMullan said "young people should be aware of the consequences of anti-social behaviour in an area and the effect it can have on the everyday lives of residents in the local community.

"Deliberately lighting fires is particularly reckless and can have catastrophic consequences.

"Anyone who engages in this kind of activity can end up with a criminal record which can affect your travel, education and employment opportunities in the future."

Hundreds of parents took to social media to describe their anger at the damage and said "young children will be so disappointed" by the damage.

One woman said: "This is an absolute disgrace. Hope police get whoever is responsible!!! Poor, disappointed children".

A man also wrote: "Senseless vandalism and destruction".

The PSNI have appealed for anyone with any information to contact police on the non emergency number 101.
