A woman died yesterday after she was hit by a bus on the M2 motorway just outside Belfast.

The tragedy happened on the country-bound lane of the carriageway close to the Sandyknowes roundabout.

It is understood it is being investigated if the women walked into the path of oncoming traffic.

Bus operator Translink said the accident happened at around 5.50am and involved the service between Belfast city centre and Aldergrove International Airport.

A total of four passengers were on board.

A Translink spokeswoman said: "The emergency services attended the scene and the PSNI and Translink are currently investigating the incident."

PSNI Inspector Rosie Leech said: "The circumstances of the collision, which occurred just before 6am, are now under investigation and we are keen to hear from witnesses".

The motorway was closed between the Greencastle and Sandyknowes offslips but re-opened later yesterday morning.
