A FILM telling the story of Amy Winehouse’s life has become the second most popular documentary at the UK box office.

The latest figures show Amy has grossed £3.44 million.

Directed by Asif Kapadia, who was also behind the award-winning Senna documentary, Amy has surpassed the £3.17m taken by the film about former F1 ace Ayrton Senna.

American director Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 remains the highest grossing (non-concert) documentary at the UK box office, grossing more than £6.5 million.

Amy producer James Gay-Rees said: “We were amazed that Senna struck such a chord when it came out in the UK and didn’t think that anything could reach that kind of audience again, so it’s an indictment of Amy’s incredible popularity that the film has done so well, she’s still a massive star.

“It feels like the country has fallen in love with her all over again and it is hugely satisfying to have helped create a more rounded picture of someone who was so massively misunderstood when she was here.

“It was a massive honour to have been given the chance to tell her story.”

The film shows previously unseen footage of the star, and also features unheard tracks from her repertoire.

Her father Mitch Winehouse recently revealed on Australian television that his daughter, pictured, had thought she was pregnant before she died.

He told Channel Seven’s Weekend Sunrise show: “She was with Reg [Traviss], they were going to get married.

“I shouldn’t tell you this but she thought she was pregnant at some stage.

“To give the impression that she was on her own is frankly criminal.”

He also revealed he is working alongside her former fiance on a new documentary about her.

She died in 2011 from alcohol poisoning, after battling drink and drugs for many years.
