Shock at criminal charges against water protestors
A Socialist TD has slammed a decision to bring criminal charges against water charge protesters who targeted Tánaiste Joan Burton.
The Republic’s Director of Public Prosecutions is set to bring a variety of charges against more than 20 people, including false imprisonment and criminal damage.
Ms Burton was trapped in her car for over two hours after attending a graduation ceremony in the Jobstown area of Dublin last November when protestors surrounded the vehicle.
More than 40 people were later arrested by gardaí, including TD Paul Murphy.
Mr Murphy yesterday described news of the charges as “shocking”, while Sinn Fein's Padraig Mac Lochlainn said it was a “worrying development”.
