FOUR holidaymakers were taken to hospital yesterday after their car crashed while driving to the airport.

The one-vehicle crash happened on the Ballyutoag Road near Nutts Corner in Co Antrim.

It is understood four women in the car had been travelling to Belfast International Airport to board a flight to Ibiza when the crash happened.

They were said to have been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment.

Their injuries were last night not thought to be serious.

The Ballyutoag Road was closed yesterday between the Seven Mile Straight and Lylehill Road following the crash and diversions were put in place.

Friends of the women, thought to be from the Belfast area and aged in their twenties, last night expressed shock online over the crash.

Just hours earlier friends on social media sites had been wishing the group well ahead of their holiday.

One woman wrote on Facebook: "Thinking of everyone involved in the crash on their way to the airport. Awful news. Hope they make a speedy recovery."
