A FIRE at an old factory site in north Belfast is being treated as deliberate, the Fire Service said yesterday.

Thick clouds of smoke covered the skyline as firefighters tackled the blaze yesterday afternoon at the derelict premises off the Oldpark Road.

Nearby residents were advised to close doors and windows due to the large plumes of smoke.

Four fire appliances attended the old Charles Bell Blinds store shortly after 12.30pm.

Three firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras also dealt with the fire.

A spokesman for the Fire Service said the roof of the property was damaged during the incident.

No-one was inside at the time.

Police were also called to the scene and helped with managing traffic in the area.

The fire was extinguished and the incident has been passed to the PSNI to investigate.
