POLICE hunting the killer of popular mum of three Jennifer Dornan are examining CCTV footage from a nearby garage in the hope it will yield vital clues.

Ms Dornan's body was discovered following a blaze at her home in Hazel View in the Lagmore area of west Belfast early on Sunday.

Police launched a murder inquiry on Monday following a post mortem examination and made an appeal for information.

Eye witnesses reported seeing a silver car speeding from the scene on the Stewartstown Road in the early hours of the morning and it is believed the driver stopped at a nearby garage.

Detectives are now examining CCTV footage to establish if it is connected to the brutal murder of the 30-year-old.

Ms Dornan's three young children Martin (8), Jayden (5) and Abbey (3), who were not in the house on the night of the fire, are being comforted by relatives.

It is the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years.

Ms Dornan's brother Stephen died suddenly six years ago. The 23-year-old was found dead at a flat in Aitnamona in west Belfast in December, 2009. At the time it was thought Mr Dornan, who had a previous history of drug abuse, had died of butane toxicity.

A police officer who gave evidence at an inquest held in 2011 said she had found the flat in a state of disarray as if someone had been "rummaging" through the drawers.

Forensic officers continued to examine the scene of the murder yesterday. Police believe the house fire was started in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Structural experts have been called in to prop the damaged house up with metal struts and make it safe for investigators to enter.

The next door neighbour's house, which was also badly damaged in the blaze, remains closed off as part of the crime scene. The fire appeared to have started in the bedroom of Ms Dornan's home.

Officers also carried out door to door enquires in the area and searched patches of nearby waste ground for potential evidence.

The killer may have been known to Ms Dornan and appeared to be aware that her children were not at home on Saturday night.

Ms Dornan had been on a night out with friends on Saturday in the Devenish complex in Finaghy.

After calling to a friend's house, she left to walk to her own home at around 3am.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes, who is leading the murder investigation, appealed to the driver or any passengers who were travelling in the silver car to come forward.
