Gardaí yesterday began investigating whether a 48-year-old motorist killed in an M1 motorway collision was driving in the wrong direction.

The fatal crash occurred at around 10.30pm on Sunday on the northbound stretch of motorway between junctions 15 and 16, close to Castlebellingham.

There were early indications that the man, who died at the scene, may have been travelling southwards when the crash took place.

The driver of a second car was seriously hurt. The injured woman, who was in her 40s, was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. She is understood to have suffered multiple fractures.

A Garda spokesman said that the driver and a passenger - a mother and her young daughter - of a third car were also taken to hospital, but that their injuries were not thought to be serious.

The road at the scene remained closed until yesterday morning to allow forensic collision investigators to conduct an examination.

Gardaí appealed for anyone who was on the northbound carriageway on Sunday night and who witnessed the collision to contact investigators at Ardee Garda Station.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man was seriously injured in a single car crash in Co Limerick early yesterday.

The victim was travelling in a car with two other men when their vehicle left the road at around 3am at Ballycastle near Kildimo. He was transferred to Cork University Hospital after suffering head injuries while the other two occupants were treated at University Hospital Limerick.
