AN INTERACTIVE tour of the site of the Ballymurphy Massacre has been launched.

The self-guided tour, which was designed by the victims' families, allows people to download information about those who were killed in Ballymurphy in west Belfast in August 1971.

Each spot on the tour is marked by a QR code, which can be scanned using a smart phone and QR code reader app. Users will then be directed to a web page which gives details of what happened at that location and additional information about the victims.

The tour is accessible from any of the six key locations, as well as the Ballymurphy Massacre mural on the international wall on the Falls Road.

Eleven people, including a priest, Fr Hugh Mullan, and a mother-of-eight, were shot and killed by the British army during a 36-hour period from August 9 to August 11 following the introduction of internment.

Briege Voyle, whose mother Joan Connolly was murdered in the massacre, said the families aim to develop the tour.

"We are delighted to be launching the interactive tour which is targeted at the younger generation and tourists in an effort to reach out and tell our story," she said.

"We will be working on the tour over the coming months to add audio of family members telling the story of what happened to their loved ones and would encourage everyone to give it a go."
