A TODDLER who fell into a pond in south Armagh had shown improvement yesterday, according to those treating him.

The 16-month-old boy had been in a critical, but stable, condition in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital where he was transferred after initial treatment at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.

However, yesterday, a Belfast Trust spokesman confirmed that his condition had progressed to "stable", a week after he was admitted.

The child is understood to have been visiting a grandparent's house in Crossmaglen when the accident happened on Friday July 24.

It is believed the child wandered off from the house on Ballsmill Road at about 3.30pm. Reports suggested that following a search of the house, the little boy was found in a garden pond at the rear of the property.

A police spokesman said they had received a report that the child had fallen into the pond and he was taken to hospital.

Police enquiries are ongoing.

Meanwhile, in Co Mayo, a young boy has died following an accident on a farm.

The four-year-old boy is believed to have been hit by a trailer on the property at Ballinaboy, a short distance from Belmullet, shortly before 9pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí said the incident is being treated as a tragic accident and the Health and Safety Authority has been notified.

Inspectors are reported to have visited the scene.
