POLICE are treating UDA graffiti daubed on the wall of a primary school in Co Derry as a hate crime.

The graffiti was sprayed on a wall at Drumachose PS on the Alexander Road in Limavady.

Sinn Féin councillor Brenda Chivers expressed concern.

"This development is very worrying as we have seen the activity of this organisation increase this year in nearby towns with sometimes deadly effect," she said.

"Graffiti along with paramilitary flags and emblems are being used to mark out territory throughout the north.

"This is most unwelcome and needs to be tackled by those with leadership responsibilities in loyalist areas."

UDA graffiti was also said to have been daubed on residential walls in the area.

The PSNI last night said it was investigating a report of criminal damage in the Alexander Road area on July 14.

A spokesman said: "UDA graffiti was sprayed on a wall in the area. We are investigating the incident as a hate crime."

Police appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on the non-emergency number 101.
